Centro de Estudos Clássicos - Faculdade de Letras (FLUL)

Located in the heart of Lisbon, the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL) stands as one of Portugal’s foremost institutions in the humanities. Originating from the reorganisation of the University of Lisbon in 1911, FLUL evolved into a major centre for advanced research and teaching, combining long-established philological traditions with interdisciplinary perspectives on culture, history, and languages.

Today, the Faculty hosts a diverse academic community engaged in nationally and internationally recognised research across Classical Studies, History, Philosophy, Linguistics, and Archaeology.

Among FLUL’s research units, the Centro de Estudos Clássicos (CEC) occupies a central role in the Faculty’s academic framework. Established in 1966, CEC advances FLUL’s mission in the study of classical antiquity by providing a specialised institutional foothold for research on Greek and Latin language, literature, history, and material culture.

Serving as FLUL’s principal hub for scholarship in classical philology, CEC supports specialised work on classical philology, textual criticism, epigraphy, manuscript studies, and the reception of antiquity from Late Antiquity to the modern era.
